“Talkin in cheesy I got cheddar, let that marinate in yo cerebellum…”
– quote from “Been Broke”
In the new track “Been Broke,” Lil Rod testifies to his own stimulating life story while reminding us of the vulnerability and costs that people on the bottom of the ladder have to face. He teams up with rapper Squalla, whose strong verse adds to the song’s thematic heft and cinematic quality. “Been Broke” is one of the first singles that Lil Rod released under his own name.
The visual, directed by Lia B and Matt Stanley, captures the pair in action in a mansion, counting money and enjoying the company of beautiful women. They heighten the intensity of the clip by playing with the saturation and the color of the footage, making you feel like you’ve slipped into a dream of comfort, sensuality, and sudden riches.
Lil Rod has been in the studio 12 to 16 hours a day since 2013 as an artist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter. His first solo single as a rapper, “Win,” is a celebration of life’s successes and the power to manifest wins and live life with gusto. He has produced for Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige, Mary Mary and recently placed a single on Jack Harlow’s debut project. Music has taken him from the streets of Chicago to the studios of Los Angeles.
