The highly anticipated return of the Aaron McGruder comic strip turned cartoon series “The Boondocks” has once again been pushed back on HBO Max. The premiere had previously been delayed due to the 2020 pandemic.

In June of 2019, HBO ordered 24 episodes of the series to run over two seasons 5 years after it came to an end on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim lineup. “The Boondocks” was positioned to premiere in September 2020.

According to reports, a release date wasn’t specified and only stated “later in 2021.” A reason for the delay wasn’t given.

The upcoming series will run two seasons, and a 50-minute special is also in the works.

Although we have to wait for the much-anticipated return, it will be worth it. Its creator, Aaron McGruder, left the Cartoon Network production a few seasons into its run. Now he’s highly involved with the show’s revival.

McGruder previously said, “There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today.”

“The Boondocks” is about the adventures of Riley and Huey Freeman, two boys who undergo a culture clash when they moved from Chicago to live with their grandfather in the suburbs.
