The Influence of Cannabis on Creativity

“The best way I would describe the effect of the marijuana and the hashish is that it would make me relaxed and creative.”

– Steve Jobs

Cannabis is well known for causing the brain to release dopamine, the neurochemical that gives the user a calm, euphoric sensation, feeling as the thoughts move freely, almost flowing through them.

When THC reaches the brain, it binds to cannabinoid receptors and causes changes in neurotransmitter levels, especially those of dopamine and norepinephrine levels; a kind of interaction that leads to increased mood, reduced anxiety, relaxed mindsets, and so on.

Cannabis gives rise to new ways of thinking and understanding; a state in which, at times, the experience of unusual and original thoughts overwhelms the user. For this reason, this herb is considered to expand the mind which in its turn, enhances creativity. Consumption of cannabis enables the user to actually enjoy small particularities that our preoccupied brains normally filter out.

Cannabis has long been a companion for creative minds and a supporter for those in need of mental therapy. It has a way of expanding the imagination, making it possible to access new concepts and ideas.

The Impact of Cannabis on the Quality of Life

Many users often claim that cannabis has the potential to enhance their creativity therein being a highly individualized experience based on their preoccupations and their particular natures.

Creativity requires intelligence and dedication, but sometimes using adjuvant-like cannabis, the person can experiment sharpened skills.

Marijuana as a stimulant “boosts output of all kinds” says Dr. Alice Weaver Flaherty, a neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and professor at Harvard Medical School who specializes in deep brain stimulation and the brain’s relationship with creativity.

Similarly, it is definitely not for everyone to use cannabis to initiate creativity.

Cannabis and Sexuality

Research has revealed that creativity is associated with the frontal lobe of the brain, and in this manner, cannabis intake increases cerebral blood flow (CBF), making it more functional.

Nevertheless, some studies continue to evaluate two types of thinking: divergent thinking and convergent thinking.

Divergent thinking – a process of thought that explores many possible solutions and usually takes place in a spontaneous, free-flowing, non-linear way.

Convergent thinking – a thought process which involves judging a finite number of solutions, such as a multiple choice test, to arrive at a “correct” answer.

But for all that, creativity must be exercised in the ways most conducive to enjoyment and emotional expression. Moreover there are differences in tolerance, anxiousness and other aspects of neurochemistry that affect our creative abilities under cannabis influence.

Another important aspect to be taken into consideration is that not all strains are created equal, thanks to differences in terpene and cannabinoid profiles which mark the variety of cannabis strains.

Some famous strains proclaimed by the artists to improve creativity are Kali Mist, Jack Herer, Chemdawg, Purple Haze, LSD, Berry White, Tangie and Jillybean.

To draw the conclusion, even if not suitable for everyone, a small portion of this herb can indeed be the right tool for what the brain needs to get going, but too much of it can sometimes hinder creative skills.
