On March 31st, 2019 humanity took a huge loss with the untimely death of American rapper/songwriter Ermias Joseph Asghedom, better known as Nipsey Hussle. Hussle came from humble beginnings but always knew he was special, even at an early age Hussle demanded school administrators to test him for advanced placement. Though Nipsey a South Los Angeles native was no stranger to gang culture, he evolved into an icon loved by the masses. Hussle who was noted for his musical achievements received a Grammy nomination for his debut album Victory Lap. While having amazing success in his music career, Nipsey was also a very savvy investor and philanthropist. He used his wealth to bring jobs and resources to his neighborhood in which he bought half of a strip mall and turned into businesses to provide employment for the community. Hussle helped with the renovation of 59th Street Elementary School and also opened a collaborative workspace to give creatives and young businessmen and women from the community a place to network where they would have the resources to be successful. Marathon, Nipsey’s business moniker was used for his clothing line and store, as well as his dispensary and personal marijuana strain. Nipsey was always looking to give back and better the community from which he came. He was a very conscious person whose message was self-awareness, unity and financial wellness. Since his passing, there have been several murals painted and the intersection of Slauson and Crenshaw has been renamed Nipsey Hussle Square. Hussle was very connected in his community, he knew everyone from the heights of the judicial system to the depths of gang culture and was in the process of bringing everyone together to implement programs that would perpetuate change. Truly a one of a kind human being the world was blessed to have experienced Nipsey Hussle, he will truly be missed.
